Martin Bashir
Celebrated journalist who has grown almost as famous as the celebrities he has interviewed
Martin Bashir is a British journalist born in London on 19 January 1963. He studied English and History at King Alfred's College and King's College London. His journalism career began in 1986, working for the BBC on Songs of Praise, Public Eye and Panorama.
Career Highlights
He rose to worldwide prominence in 1995 when he interviewed the Princess of Wales for Panorama — she spoke about her struggle with bulimia, the breakdown of her marriage and her affair with James Hewitt. The interview commanded a worldwide audience of over 22 million in the UK alone. Martin won a BAFTA TV Award and was named Royal Television Society's Journalist of the Year in 1996.
Other notable interviews include Louise Woodward, the five men suspected of killing Stephen Lawrence, Lord Archer, Tony Martin and George Best.
In 2003, Martin trailed Michael Jackson for eight months, producing an exclusive documentary that was watched around the world.
Martin lived and worked in New York from 2004, joining ABC News as co-anchor of Nightline. From December 2010 to 2013 he was at NBC News as an MSNBC anchor and Dateline correspondent. He returned to the UK and was appointed BBC Religious Affairs Correspondent in September 2016.
